Bargain Books: Crossroads

I recently signed up for a emailing list that notifies me about cheap, and even free, ebooks I can put on my Kindle. They are mostly unknown works by authors who have not garnered success. There are a few known works or known authors but not many. Unfortunately, most of the free books are the first book in a series. I was able to find one that wasn't. The book is called Crossroads and it was written by Chandler McGrew. I had never heard of him before, but the book was described as urban fantasy, and I have been wanting to get more into that genre. And I couldn't pass up the price.

The book tells the story of a couple different people. There is 14-year-old Kira who was raised in a carnival but went on the run when her parents and everyone else in the carnival was murdered. Their is Sheila who you find out has a special talent. Then there is Clem and Silky who live on an island shrouded in mystery. The book eventually unravels how these characters are all connected in an intriguing conclusion.

The book is well written, and the characters are interesting. The plot moves constantly forward. The settings were well described. It was a good book. All it was missing was that elusive "IT" factor that makes a book hard to put down. It was intriguing. I liked it, but I had no problem setting it down and going a couple of days without picking it up again. Maybe it is because I was more hung up on FFXIV. I'm not sure what it was, but it wasn't amazing. Now if I ever got a novel published and the only critique on it was that it wasn't amazing, I'd be ecstatic. But, like I've said before, there are a lot of amazing books out there, and I am not a very fast reader. I want to spend my time reader books I love. I definitely give this a bargain read rating. All you avid readers pick it up while it's free.
