Stop Bullying, Speak Up Make sure to mark your calendars because Friday, December 19, 2014, is the fifth annual “Wear Star Wars Share Star Wars” Day!

What is “Wear Star Wars Share Star Wars” Day? It’s a day when the fan community comes together to proudly wear Star Wars, support geek culture, and stand up to bullying. Not only do fans wear their favorite Star Wars clothes and costumes, but we also go out to share our love for Star Wars with the rest of the world by donating a toy to a young girl or boy for the holiday season.

What’s the history behind the event? This event began back in November 2010, when the daughter of multiple-award winning author Carrie Goldman was bullied in school because of her love for Star Wars. Members of the 501st Legion stepped up and supported young Katie by presenting her with her own stormtrooper armor. Since then, Katie has passed on the armor to another bullied young girl in an effort to speak up and stop bullying.

To celebrate this year’s event, here’s what you have to do on Friday, December 19:

  1. Wear something Star Wars or from the realm of science fiction.
  2. Donate a Star Wars or science fiction toy to a child in need. Be certain that you tape a post-it note on the new, unwrapped toy specifying that it can go to a girl or a boy. Otherwise, these traditional “boy toys” will be given to boys. Take the toy to a hospital, a shelter, or drop it off with any charitable organization collecting toys.

Last year, I wore my Ahsoka Tano tunic from Her Universe and donated a LEGO Star Wars toy, which I appropriately marked with a post-it, as instructed above.

Join the “Wear Star Wars Share Star Wars” event on Facebook and continue contributing to the ongoing conversation about Star Wars, science fiction, and standing up against bullying. Twitter users, use the hashtag #WearStarWars2014 and share your experience!
