Exclusive: Is Disney/Lucasfilm Developing a 'Trilogy' Of Obi-Wan Star Wars Movies?

Rumors about a possible Obi-Wan Kenobi Star Wars spin-off is nothing new, but now we're hearing word that Lucasfilm is so keen on the idea, they're currently developing a trilogy of films centered around the iconic Jedi.  Come inside for the full scoop.

I'm going to preface ALL of this with a big disclaimer here, it's pure rumor at this point.  While I trust the source and the information that's been given in the past, it's entirely possible that he's misinterpreting the information at his disposal right now.  That's what I'm thinking, but I'll explain why I feel that way here in a bit.  Let's move on to the rumor itself.

A few weeks ago, we reported on the rumor that, due to the popularity of the character with fans, Disney/Lucasfilm are actively developing an Obi-Wan Kenobi standalone film.  This isn't the first time we've heard of a Kenobi spin-off either.  Over a year and a half ago, when we first LEARNED about the spin-off movies, one of the first rumors said that Kenobi would be getting his own film (with Darth Maul no less).  In short, these Kenobi rumors have been around for a while, and where there's smoke...there could very well be fire.

Our source has gone on to expand on last month's rumor that the art department were drafting ideas for a Kenobi standalone:

"First up, they are not talking about an Obi-Wan spin-off movie but a trilogy of Obi-Wan movies. I need to stress that these movies are not connected. They aren't part of a story arc but 3 separate Obi-Wan adventures set between Episodes III and IV."

Huh....that's interesting.  This is coming based on a variety of art he's seen being developed for the films based on ideas.  If it were to happen, I like the idea of it not being an interconnected trilogy, but rather a set of films that can each stand on their own.  What ideas could these three films center on:

"It seems like the 3 movie ideas are as follows:

One set completely on Tatooine and two where Obi-Wan travels elsewhere in the Galaxy.

Qui-Gon Jinn is very much present in these stories.  So too is Owen Lars. Several characters from the Clone Wars T.V show would make an appearance.  There would be flashbacks to Obi-Wan fighting in the Clone Wars."

A lot of this makes sense to me, and I could easily see them trying to tie in Qui-Gon Jinn into the new films (since they weren't able to get him back for a cameo in the later prequels) as well as characters from The Clone Wars.  It all ties into the larger connected universe that the Story Group has been working so hard on.  The problem? I don't see them doing a full 'trilogy' of Obi-Wan Kenobi films.

I'm pretty sure a standalone Kenobi film is going to happen, but it seems like they want to use other characters and timeframes for the other standalone titles.  As I said, I trust the source, I think his perspective on the information is a little different.  What it sounds like to me, is that Disney/Lucasfilm is actively cooking up ideas for a Kenobi movie.  This would involve getting a BUNCH of different concept art and treatments that would showcase each idea.  Seeing all of these together may make it seem as if they're working on more than one film, but it could also mean that they haven't landed on the idea they want just yet.

I could be wrong.  The source seems to be adamant that he's being told it's going to be THREE films and isn't misinterpreting other info he's getting.  As I said, I'm sure we'll get a Kenobi movie, and I'm very excited about it, but I'm not sure about a trilogy.  Perhaps they are developing a trilogy, but waiting on how the first one does before going full-steam ahead with it (or to see if Ewan McGregor would even be on board for all three).  Frankly, I love Kenobi, and I think there are PLENTY of interesting stories to be told around his character.  At the same time, however, I'd love to see other characters get a shot on the big screen too.

So take this rumor for what it is...a rumor.  IF we do get a Kenobi trilogy, how interested would you be in seeing it? Which characters from The Clone Wars would you hope make an appearance?  Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

[If this rumor sounds vaguely familiar, that's because MakingStarWars made mentioned something about it quickly on Twitter, but we're bringing down the scoopage and details (such as they are)!]
