I’m currently reading the Republic Commando series, and it’s great to finally dive into places like devianART and say, “Oh, I know who that is! That’s Sev!” That’s how I found Scout’s work. She has a knack for making humorous pieces, one of my favorites being Captain Rex pinned down by fangirls. My absolute favorite piece, though, is titled “What Should Have Been,” featuring Darman, Kad and the ghost of Etain. All of my feels! If you haven’t read the Republic Commando series, I highly recommend adding it to your reading list.

Tell us about yourself.
Hey, Scout here! Well, what can I say? I love Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, secretly watching Disney movies, horses, drawing, and toast with copious amounts of cinnamon butter! I’m also a proud member of the 501st Legion costuming organization, so when I’m not drawing something, I’m probably running around town as a scout trooper (that gets me nerdy street creds, right?) I also have a pet goldfish named Pork Chop.

When and how did you become a Star Wars fan?
Well, I just grew up watching the movies really. I remember being glued to the TV during the speeder bike chase scene in Return of the Jedi. I guess the idea of flying around an obstacle strewn forest at 200 mph looked fun! Haha! Then Attack of the Clones came out, and that’s when I decided I needed to learn to draw all that good looking white armor.

What tools do you use to create your art?
Mostly my Wacom Bamboo tablet and Photoshop. Though, sometimes I get bored and doodle on paper with just a no. 2 pencil (I know boring right? Hehe!)

What is your favorite Star Wars piece that you have created and why are you fond of it?
Hmmm…Probably Scorch. It just looks great to me, details without being overly complicated! Scorch is one of my all time favorite characters from the Star Wars universe, so it was fun to do something not cartoonish of him.

What’s the best and worst thing about being an artist?
The best part…It’s different for everyone I think, but for me it’s just being able to make people smile and laugh. I’ve always been a people pleaser, so when I discovered the magic of cartooning and how it makes people happy, I latched onto it like a mynock to a power cable!

The part I least like (besides episodes of un-inspiration, which everyone gets) is probably when people expect/demand art for free. Seriously folks…we artists have bills to pay, too!

Star Wars Rebels comes out next year. What are some of your theories concerning the plot or characters? What are you looking forward to seeing the most?
Hahah! Well…the teeny tiny bit I have seen of it, it doesn’t seem to have any ‘rebel-ness’ about it. Of course…I’ll only be watching it for the clone/stormtroopers anyway.

Are you looking forward to the future Star Wars films? What are your hopes or worries?
I am very much looking forward to them! Yeah, there’s a chance they could blow it, but I have high hopes! As long as J.J. what’s-his-name keeps the lens flare down, we’ll be good. I say…bring it on!!

Any final thoughts?
To all you new/young/beginning artists out there…KEEP DRAWING!! Even when people are a pain! I had an “art” teacher once that told me my art was a piece of crap (literally…that’s what he said), so I decided anything he said after that was moot and kept doodling and learning things by myself. Look up tutorials, get advice from other artists you admire…just keep learning things and have fun!

You are a real inspiration, Scout! I’m sorry to hear that that art teacher said those things to you, but I am happy that you kept working on your craft. Thank you for the advice because I know there are artists out there that need the boost. You have real talent, and I love that one of your goals is to make people laugh.
