Tieatie by Middas

Today’s spotlight is on Mittwoch!

Mittwoch recently joined the Tumblr Star Wars fan community this past August, but she has been a deviant since 2012, sharing her fan art of her favorite Star Wars: The Clone Wars characters. Her latest artwork features Maul and Savage Opress in dashing suits, a piece inspired by algrnaas’ art of Savage not knowing how to tie his tie. My absolute favorite piece in her growing collection includes Ahsoka Tano, Asajj Ventress, and Bo-Katan Kryze caught in a blaze of glory, entitled “Girls Being Awesome“.

You can find more of her artwork on Tumblr and deviantART.

Tell us about yourself.
I am not yet 20 years old. I live somewhere in the continent of Europe and still attend an art-ish school, though fortunately, I’m in the last year. I hope to be studying something design- or IT-related next year, so I’ll either make art my job or keep it as a hobby, as it is now. Fan art is pretty much all I do right now because I just don’t have the time to do any personal projects.

When and how did you become a Star Wars fan?
All I can say is that it was way too late and not so long ago. I saw the movies only two or three years ago and always liked them, but I really started to become a fan after I watched The Clone Wars. I place the blame on my two flatmates.

What tools do you use to create your art?
Recently, I work almost only on my computer, using a Wacom tablet and Photoshop. I do keep a sketchbook, of course, but I haven’t done anything aside from quick sketches on a traditional medium for a long time. There is always some schoolwork I do traditionally, but I usually exclude that from my personal work.

What is your favorite Star Wars piece that you have created and why are you fond of it?

That would be Rex lying on this weird couch. I did it for my sister’s birthday, and not only was it a lot of fun drawing his armor, it’s also one of the few pictures I don’t really have anything to complain about at this point. Close to it is the animation with Kit Fisto, though. Just because it was fun to do.

What’s the best and worst thing about being an artist?
The best thing is you can probably put everything on paper that comes to your mind, and also, that you have a real chance to eventually combine your hobby and your job. The worst thing for me is always the feeling of not making any progress, having to force yourself to draw certain things and feeling like you are not good enough. Unfortunately, that feeling happens from time to time.

Star Wars Rebels is currently in its first season. What are your thoughts? How do you think the series will progress?
I was a little distrustful after the first episode, but with the newer ones, I’m absolutely excited to see what’s coming next! I even started reading A New Dawn. I want to see so much more of the characters, their backstories and the little hints the developers put in.

Are you looking forward to the future Star Wars films? After watching the teaser trailer for The Force Awakens, what are your hopes or worries?
At first, I didn’t really want a new Star Wars episode and it took me some time to get used to the idea. But now that I saw the trailer and heard some of the background information and the rumours, I’m totally looking forward to it.
I don’t really have many hopes right now because I don’t know what to expect. I have no idea where this is all going. Part of me hopes that there won’t be a love story because I’m so tired of those. I fear, as always, the overly used clichés, but I’ll just have to trust in J.J. Abrams not to use many.

How else do you express your love for Star Wars (cosplay, fanfiction, etc.)?
Well, I own some merchandise and I still have a custom design for a cosplay I will sew as soon as I have a little bit of time and money. I would also write fan fiction, but I don’t really have the patience to do it.

Any final thoughts?
I think Star Wars is the best thing I have been a fan of yet and I hope I will always have the time do draw fan art, read the books and finally finish this cosplay.
