Her Universe’s “Year of the Fangirl” initiative began in early 2013 with the goal to highlight and appreciate a different fangirl every day and support the growth of the fangirl community. Since then, hundreds and hundreds of fangirls ranging from various ages and backgrounds have applied to be “Fangirl of the Day.” As a result of bringing the community together and demonstrating that women are proud geeks, the Daily Dot declared Ashley Eckstein as one of ten people who changed fandom in 2013.

Most geek girls have had their geek cred questioned and been called “fake” at some point in their lives, and Eckstein strived with this campaign to bring together women from all over the world to form a supportive community on her company blog and on social media. Eckstein spotlighted a “Fangirl of the Day” to show how everyday women can be geeks and gathered a team of experienced contributors to help her efforts.

On November 4, 2013, Her Universe named me “Fangirl of the Day.” I am so proud to be part of a community that supports each other and creates a space that allows us to be who we are as geeks and fangirls.

Her Universe has proven time and again that the female fanbase should not be excluded from merchandise because we are powerful consumers with the desire to express our fandoms. Ashley Eckstein and the rest of the Her Universe team continually listen to us and bring us the brands that we want, such as Star Wars, Marvel, Transformers, The Walking Dead, and much more.

Now, it’s our turn to listen. Her Universe needs our help. The database containing over 900 fangirl entries has been accidentally erased. That’s about two years’ worth of fangirls! Ashley is calling on all of us to re-nominate fangirls that haven’t been named “Fangirl of the Day” yet and to continue to nominate new fangirls. Reach out to your family members, friends, and colleagues at work. Let them know that being a proud fangirl is a wonderful thing and that you want to nominate them in Her Universe’s initiative to create a strong community of fangirls. I plan to nominate my mom and re-nominate my closest friends in order to help replenish what was lost. Who will you be nominating?

Submit your fangirls using the online form at Her Universe.

Give back to Her Universe, spread the word, and let’s reach those numbers to make “Year of the Fangirl” last for years to come!
