Iron Man and Hulk: Heroes United Releasing in December

Remember that original animated movie, Iron Man and Hulk: Heroes United, that Marvel was planning to release in April? It’s now due out on December 3.

Starring Adrian Pasdar (Heroes) as Iron Man and Fred Tatasciore (Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H.) as Hulk, this CGI cartoon seems to be focused on the superheroics instead of the alter ego interaction that makes the two together so fun, based on this promo clip.

I think the CG and the shading they’re using make Hulk’s muscles look weird, too chunky and blocky. I also have to wonder about Tony Stark, super-genius, reminding the Hulk he can fly right before he lands for no reason other than to make himself vulnerable to the Hulk’s response attack. That choice strikes me as dumb writing.

Iron Man and Hulk: Heroes United is the “first full-length, direct-to-video, CGI animated feature from Marvel Animation Studios”. Since I remember 2010′s Planet Hulk, I’m guessing that either the CG or the Marvel Studios part is the key modifier (or maybe both). Here’s the official plot description:

When two HYDRA scientists try to supercharge a Stark Arc Reactor with Hulk’s Gamma Energy, they unleash a being of pure electricity called the Zzzax — and he’s hungry for destruction. Together, Iron Man and Hulk are the only force that stands in the way of the Zzzax’s planetary blackout. But first the superhero duo will have to get through snarling Wendigos, deadly robots, and the scaly powerhouse, Abomination. Can two of Marvel’s mightiest heroes find a way to work together without smashing each other before time runs out?

They chose the team-up because, as Marvel’s Head of Television, Jeph Loeb, disclosed, “We tend to keep an eye on who folks want to see more of.” The movie runs 72 minutes and will have a post-credit surprise, as the big-screen Marvel movies do. Bonus features will include:

Marvel “Inter-missions” — Marvel puts a humorous twist on their old-school original animated series. What better way to take a break from fighting villains than hitting pause and enjoying a little comedy with Marvel Mash-Ups.

Marvel Team-Up with Ryan Penagos and Joe Q. — Superheroes are larger than life on their own. But when they join forces with another, they become a force to be reckoned with. Marvel’s Chief Creative Officer, Joe Quesada, joins Ryan Penagos (Agent M) in an intimate and lively one-on-one conversation about these Marvel Team-Ups.
