Sci-Fi characters who survived their planets' destruction [infographic]

It's a good time to be a geek. Let me count the ways:

Star Trek Into Darkness was released last month and it's pretty badass.

The Doctor Who 50th Anniversary is a few months away - whoo!

Man of Steel is showing next Friday.

These shows have one thing in common - they all feature characters who survived the destruction of their homeworlds. This infographic shows a couple more examples from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Star Wars and Battlestar Galactica of people who escaped the same fate that befell their species.

The trick seems to be that if you want to ensure that you survive if your planet gets blown up, you need to do one of these things:

Steal a TARDIS
Join Starfleet
Make friends with a hitchhiker from a planet somewhere in the vicinity of Betelgeuse
Have your Dad put you in an escape pod
Be captured by Grand Moth Tarkin
Be on a beaten up starship that can't be taken by the Cylons because it's so damn old
