... and then it was Friday.
Yes, Friday at the San Diego Comic Con is one of the busiest and fun days: More CosPlay, more panels, more attendees, and more things in general going on.
Unlike that past three years, I opted to avoid the Hall H lines from Hell and chose to explore and enjoy the rest of the Convention. Frankly, as 'successful' as my Hall H endeavors were last year, I missed out on 2 full days of the CosPlayers and other events and sales going on. I figured that if I'm going to spend so much time and money to get to the Convention, I might as well get as much out of it as possible.
This also included my dressing up in my Star Fleet uniform, a la Deep Space Nine, circa Season 5:
Unfortunately, this day also was the most humid so the uniform eventually became a burden. The later the day, the more disheveled I became:
Still, I was determined because I wore my TNG style uniform last year, but because we were in Hall H all day, I never had a chance to take photos with it.
Note: I may have been the only one wearing this style of uniform. In fact, there weren't that many Star Trek costumes floating around that I saw, aside from this wild pack of Klingons I bumped into later in the day. [Sadly, the footage I took of them has been lost. Oy, I think I just forfeited my Raktajino machine.]
For the uninitiated, this is where I would have been if I had been up at 3:00 and in line no later than 4:00 am:
Most of the people there (around 7:30 am) would have been able to get in by the first panel. There were easily another 1,000 people behind them, though.
Getting back into the start of the day, I awoke on Friday around 5:30am - late by Comic Con standards. My brother and I were able to take a leisurely drive to our choice parking at the Hilton Bayfront, had breakfast, then scanned the layout of the grassy Bayfront Plaza where Fox built a Simpsons themed mini-park, including a huge Homer Simpson head poking out from the ground:
This was actually pretty cool because on Thursday, they were still building it and it looked quite surreal:
FYI: the event was to go inside Homer's head and see what's in there. With an average 2 hour wait by the time my brother and I made it out there, we had other priorities so we missed it.
Panel: Free Enterprise
The only panel I wanted to attend was for the Free Enterprise 15th panel. This doubled as a slight reunion and the official announcement of their Kickstarter program to produce the pilot episode for the Free Enterprise TV show. (When I last checked, they didn't make it, unfortunately.)
I've been a huge fan of this movie when I saw it on video back in '99. I can even quote sections of the movie. It was the first time I saw geeks like me portrayed in a non-stereotypical fashion, weaving between dating and talking Geek. In some ways it was the Geek version of Swingers.
The movie stars William Shatner, Erik McCormack (yup, just before Will & Grace), Rafer Weigel, Audie England, and Phil LaMarr. This is from the DVD cover:
Before the panel, I was able to meet Mark Altman, co-writer of the film and producer of the TV show project. He was very cool and appreciated my support of the film. The panel featured Mark and the director of the pilot, David Rogers (The Mindy Project, The Office). Movie co-creator and director Robert Burnett was sadly not able to attend, but the talented writer Ashley Miller "stood in" for him in the panel. A very nice surprise was Phil LaMarr who played one of the characters in the film.
Most of the panel consisted of hilarious stories about the making of the movie and where the story actually came from. "Robert Burnett" summed it up really well: "[Free Enterprise] is this totally fictional, semi-autobiographical, made-up story about something that never happened that's totally real."
It was a hilarious panel and I wished it could have lasted a little longer.
By the way, in an almost Free Enterprise fashion, I met a very attractive girl there who was dressed in classic TOS science officer dress/costume. I actually thought about possibilities ... until she talked about her husband. Such was my luck.
Wandering About:
After the panel, Drew and I just wandered about, taking as much video and photos as possible including checking out the off-site location at the Petco parking lot. Our plan was to be in Hall H all day Saturday (more on that in next week's blog post) so this was our day to really take in the sights.
These two young ladies were out helping promote Sin City 2: A Dame to Kill For. Oh yeah, I heard there were vintage cars out there, too.
FYI: This is where everything from the parking lot stuff was located
Hello Kitty is celebrating its 40th and they had a presence both inside and outside the Exhibit Hall. This is where they were set up at the parking lot. Sorry: this is the best shot I have.
Michael Myers family reunion ... creepy!
Just had to share this.
Inside the Exhibit Hall, I was able to get a handful of shots, though nowhere near as many as I wanted. Next year, I will get more shots:
Mulan having a great time.
This was an amazing dwarf costume. Made me want to play Warcraft ... or at least get a beer.
X-Men, 20's Style. This has to be one of my favorite X-Men themed costumes.
WETA's booth featured Smaug ... and the eye opened and closed.
GamesRadar had a special preview booth of their new Alien Isolation game. Lucky attendees entered the egg-shaped chamber and witnessed a preview. When they left, they all looked a little shaken. The wait was too long (a common theme) but it was cool to see the set up itself.
The remainder of the day included getting a massage (highly recommended for attendees - carrying bags all day really puts wear and tear on your back and feet) and buying things.
Thus endeth Friday. Tomorrow is another day: That day is Saturday, aka Hall H Day! Check out my next entry in a week titled "Saturday...we're waking up when?!"
