Take this latest rumor with a 3.75″ grain of salt, but apparently a listing briefly appeared on Hasbro’s customer service email page that listed a number of action figures and related items across Hasbro’s licensed brands. Included in this list were Star Wars figures.
According to the website Jedi Defender a poster on their message board found these listings and posted pictures which have now been removed. I attempted to duplicated the results to verify, but I was not able to.
Included in the product listing were the following Star Wars Rebels related figures and accessories:
- SW HERO SERIES INQUISITOR
- SW HER SERIES KANAN
- SW REBELS BLASTER
- SW REBELS STORMTROOPER
Kanan’s inclusion with the Inquisitor and without any sort of wording indicating a vehicle clearly seems to indicate that it is a character figure.
Since Kanan was not mentioned at the New York Comic Con panel which focused on the Empire and the villains of the series, I think it is safe to assume that Kanan will be aligned with the protagonists of the series and is potentially the main character or pilot of the Ghost.
One important note, the list on Hasbro’s website contains a mix of already released, cancelled and not yet released items. It is possible that Kanan is simply a place holder name for a Rebels action figure.
Star Wars often gets words and names from earthly inspirations. For example the character Ahsoka Tano has a name fairly close to the ancient Indian Emperor Ashoka Maurya. The name Ashoka coming from the sanskrit word “asoka” which means “painless, without sorrow.”
There are multiple possible linguistic inspirations for Kanan. It could be derived from the Middle Eastern location of Canaan. The arabic version of the name Kanan apparently means “merchant” or “trader.” It is also possible the inspiration comes from the Indian language of Hindi, and means “forest,” “garden,” or “jungle.” Interestingly in this context the name is traditionally female.
Another possible inspiration is from the word kanan in Indonesian, Malay, Old Javanese and Tagalog which means “right” in terms of direction.
One thing is for sure, there are no listings on Wookieepedia for Kanan, so if this is a new character it appears it will be one entirely new to the Star Wars universe.
