I'm a big fan of Joseph Campbell's monomyth theory, and that the vast majority of stories, no matter where and when they're written, all follow a single narrative formula.

If you don't want to get bogged down by the academic discourse of it all, here's a brief rundown of the monomyth theory as told by puppets:

The theory holds true for some of the most popular fantasy stories (Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Harry Potter etc.) and explains some of the tropes that we all know.
