I haven’t thought about The Red Star in literally a half-decade. The comic debuted to much acclaim in 2000, notable both for its unique SF premise — an alternate history of the USSR (which wasn’t that far departed at the time) where magic worked — and its appearance, thanks to some amazing computer-aided visuals. It was never published in a particularly timely fashion, and the last issue came out in 2008.
According to io9, it was optioned for a Warner Bros. film, after it was going to be a Universal movie, but now, “Ashley Edward Miller and Zack Stentz, who co-wrote Thor and X-Men: First Class and worked on Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles” have the option and are planning a TV version for a premium cable network. With The Americans also flashing back to American/Soviet relations in a near-past era and plenty of light-fantasy shows on TV, it could be a successful match. Kind of amazing what comic properties investors find interesting to adapt.
