A few days ago, it was announced that Star Wars Rebels would have a panel at NYCC.  This is good news to those of us still reeling after the cancelation of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. In fact, we’re only about a month away until Star Wars: The Clone Wars’ sixth season would have began to air. So here we are, in the Fall season without any new Star Wars tales on our televisions and that’s a huge bummer. What can we do? Pretty much all we can do is wait for Star Wars Rebels at this point.

We are not exactly in the season where it is raining Rebels yet. But at NYCC we are probably closer to getting something of substance. At Star Wars Celebration Europe II we got a pretty nice look at some of their coolest spoiler-free concept art. We saw images of the Ghost the starfighter which is going to play a large role in the series, at least that’s what they have planned for now (I’m looking at you Twilight).

The panel synopsis asks some questions and makes some statements worthy of speculation and gives us some hints and insights into what the show will be about.

The description asks “What happens when the Galactic Empire takes over a planet? What if Imperials took interest in your world, and garrisoned Stormtroopers and TIE fighters to maintain order?”

With this sentence, my hopes the show would feature Rex, Ahsoka, Saw, Lux, Cham Syndulla, and Korkie Kryze and the cadets were squashed. Well, not out right. It just becomes clear they won’t be the heroes. I have no doubts classic heroes from The Clone Wars might show up, in fact, I think they eventually will. Characters with a strong moral compass or at least a heart like Hondo could play their parts in upcoming story arcs.

Star Wars Rebels, I speculate, will have a new cast. It will probably feature unlikely heroes. Young people, most likely. I assume imperialism will bring in an age of injustice and these new heroes will have no choice but to fight back. After all, Luke Skywalker was pretty motivated to fight back, and extreme injustice had not even hit his planet directly. So imagine how different that would be had he lived on one of the worlds under imperial domination.

This panel will mostly be about the Galactic Empire and promises we will “ learn new information about the formidable forces of the Galactic Empire,”  which is pretty fascinating. What could we learn about the Galactic Empire we don’t know already know? I am guessing there might be some new villains, assuming Darth Vader is not in it or not the only bad guy. Perhaps we will learn what happened to those honorable clones we knew during The Clone Wars and see how they have transformed just a few years later.

It certainly sounds villain-focused for the presentation. Will we learn anything about the heroes or who pilots the Ghost?  We will surely get a sense of what the heroes are up against, but will we know who those heroes are? Pablo Hildalgo is going to have concept art to show us, so anything is possible.

I also find it interesting this first television movie is being written by Simon Kinberg who is also writing one of the film spin-off films, which means there could be some overlap in the events the stories depict.

I look forward to hearing the Tweets and information from the panel next month! I need to know everything about this show.
