Echo and Bacta by JasJuliet

Today’s spotlight is on JasJuliet!

Earlier this summer, I saw a flourish of Star Wars: The Clone Wars artwork and immediately thought, “Someone caught The Clone Wars bug.” Since the streaming debut of the series back in March, The Clone Wars has reached a wider audience, including the wonderfully talented JasJuliet. As a clone trooper fangirl myself, I go crazy for her clone-centered art, especially when Captain Rex is involved. JasJuliet’s artwork is absolutely breathtaking, and every time I see a new piece on my Tumblr dashboard, I marvel at the level of detail and technique. My favorite one is “CT-21-0408 | Echo & Bacta,” inspired by the fanfiction “Live To Fight Another Day” written by raemanzu and spica-tea. Fans shared the Echo drawing with Brent Friedman on Twitter, the writer of the arc that featured Echo’s return as an experimental soldier, and he also shared it with Dave Filoni. Needless to say, JasJuliet was in full fangirl mode!

You can find more of her artwork on Tumblr.

Tell us about yourself.
From Puerto Rico to New York, I’m a kid who loves telling stories, and ‘what if?’ is the best question you could ask me. I do illustration and am currently a senior in college studying graphic design.

When and how did you become a Star Wars fan?
I had seen all the movies growing up and had an appreciation for Star Wars as a franchise, but The Clone Wars series really made me respect it as a mythology. The world-building, the development of well-loved characters and the introduction of amazing new ones (clones, man…clones…) the plot gaps bridged, the insight into the war and the politics that went into subversively transforming the Republic into the future Empire…TCW drove it home.

Jesse and Kix by JasJuliet

What tools do you use to create your art?
An old Wacom tablet and Photoshop when I’m not doodling in a notebook.

What is your favorite Star Wars piece that you have created and why are you fond of it?
What started off as a silly idea became a still-growing series of drawings in which I put clone troopers in different kinds of suits. I have to admit, I’m pretty fond of how dapper Jesse and Kix turned out in my most recent attempt.

What’s the best and worst thing about being an artist?
Best thing? Being able to bring my ideas to life in visual, tangible form. Concepts aren’t so lost in translation, because there’s a highway between my head and my hands. It’s exhilarating. It’s fun. It’s why I love to do what I do, and probably why 9x/10 I’ll be the one contributing lots of drawn headcanons and weird, alternate universe sketches for whatever I happen to be into at the moment. (See “Ol’ Snips Tano” haha!)

Star Wars Rebels comes out in October. What are some of your theories concerning the plot or characters? What are you looking forward to seeing the most?
Pretty typical of me, but I’m terrified and anxious to see what became of the clone troopers. I also would love to see the return of Ahsoka as some sort of bolstering presence for the Rebel, but most of all, I wonder whether or not Ahsoka and Vader will ever come face to face in this series…I could hand you a notebook full of headcanons, but I digress for now…maybe I’ll draw them someday! Last but not least, I’m hoping with everything in my being that Boba Fett returns a hardened, skilled bounty hunter with the familiar clone voice and face we’re all fond of.

Are you looking forward to the future Star Wars films? What are your hopes or worries?
At this point in time, all I can say is that I’m a little cautious, mostly excited, and hopeful they’ll hit it outta the park!

Any final thoughts?
Few things have resonated with me as strongly as many of the stories and characters within the SWU, and it’s a pleasure to contribute to such a talented, cool fanbase!

Star Wars: The Clone Wars also converted me from a casual Star Wars fan to a hardcore fan, so I completely understand your love for the series and how it motivated you to appreciate the mythology. Thank you so much for sharing your artwork with us. You have a magnificent talent, and I hope to see more clones in suits and other Clone Wars art from you soon! Best of luck in your future endeavors, JasJuliet!
