Hope you enjoy-here's chapter one of "Call of the void"
Chapter 1:Rituals and madness
James Franks and Lloyd Pithworth stood before the alter they had erected in the grand library of the old mansion Franks had taken passion of after the passing of his grand uncle two years prior
this night was a moment they had worked for since they’re first dabbling in high school in the darker areas of mysticism, the almost strange obsession of theirs in the occult had cemented a lifelong friendship to a bond just short of unbreakable.
Above all they kept a facade of normality, positions of success, women and friends while making their way deeper into the occult and all arcane knowledge-the crowning event being the discoveries that lead them to that graveyard in dimension two-twenty five,James had been a little apprehensive about that however because while they had done some abhorrent things in the name of their goal digging up a ancient, and some might even say cursed, grave was not amongst them up until then.
Things had gone smoothly however and they had made off with their greatest prize to date:what was rumored to be the original “Book of Demos” this was important as the rest of the existing copies were said to have many gaps and omissions,Lloyd had proven this to himself and James by comparing the pilfered grave bound version with a copy (one of few to have survived all others being burnt) he had managed to lay hands on...
a few subsequent tests had proven the authentic nature of the tomb by putting them in contact with both fantastic and terrifying beings, with this they delved farther into some horrifying subjects and unearthed a handful of scrolls that had been central in creating the book itself.
And now here they were-ready to preform a ritual that would open amazing realms to them and reveal many things that other men had only guessed at or dreamed to know James believed,at first anyway, that what they were doing was to further mankind’s vistas by ways ether unknown and untested or in some cases locked away because of fear, superstition, and un-education..
but the last year and most certainly the past several months his surety about Lloyd’s reasons were faltering, the man seemed almost insanely driven at times and his willingness to do some ungodly things were making James a little queasy about what lay ahead, but who to go to with his fears? by rights and more then a few laws they’d broken left him with utterly no one to confide in not even his own Mother and Father.
So he just waited and hoped and prayed to any gods there may be that what he and his friend were doing was for the greater good....
“James? you ready?” Lloyd said breaking James thoughts,he nodded in the affirmative even though he was somewhat frightened but quickly managed to collect himself said a silent prayer remembered from childhood and began his end of the chant.
Lloyd started by lighting incense while answering James chanting and slowly the pentagram he stood in the middle of got a faint glow to it;at this point he brought out a small bottle and poured it into a small goblet, itself a relic of more darker things, and he placed this at the tip facing north. “oh ancient god, leader of the gods of Mesopotamia, known to Atlantis, herald of many names, thou of the originating blackness,ye answering voice of seekers of the unknown depths.....”
Lloyd raised his arms in reverence and began a series of ululating cries which James answered with differing tones, the whole of the room seemed to swim with some form of power the combination of incense and chanting created while the glow increased more and more with each passing moment and each line of blasphemous verse.
Meanwhile Lloyd was reaching a fever pitch and seemed to literally becoming someone else as his chanting was starting to be impossible to follow and, rather unexpectedly, wasn’t even Latin anymore it was in fact in the dead dialect that the original book was in at least that much James could tell, but it was things that most certainly were not in the book and were the most ghastly, inhuman vocalizations that still managed to be some kind of bestial and savage language
stranger still was the fact that while the luminance of the pentagram was growing the room seemed to be growing darker and colder.....then suddenly the room, even the air seemed to just stop,Lloyd ceased his wild wailing as well his arms hanging limp at his sides.
James shuddered and called out to his friend,he was about to walk over to him when the laughing started at first almost inaudible and he thought it a trick of his ears but it grew to a shrill intensity,it was an awful chittering insane sound that horrified him and he covered his ears with his hands to attempt blocking it out he called to Lloyd to run as he backed away then he became aware of a shape forming at one of the high windows of the library.
as it appeared Lloyd collapsed in a heap as a puppet who's strings had been cut,as suddenly as it did that it,whatever this intense black mass was,it began to seep through the windows edges almost as like a liquid seeps through a bit of tissue paper except this was akin to an oily substance then say water and blacker then any moisture on this earth or any other one in all the dimensions.
and something about this amorphous shape was of such terror that James found himself involuntary backing away even though all his senses were screaming to him to rush to his fallen friend now prone and unconscious
by now the thing had come all the way into the library and was pooled on the balcony it was a bubbling, writhing mass of utter blackness the only reason he could discern this was it had taken on a shimmering quality and looked to be taking a shape of...some sort, the laughter meanwhile had become so invasive as to be almost unbearable and was making him think his ears would burst, there was also a feeling of increased pressure almost as if the very atmosphere was trying to take on a form of it’s own.
Holding his hand fast over his ears James knew he had to do something and to his credit the first action he knew he had to take was to get to his lifetime friend and then run like hell, where he didn’t know but at present it was all he could think to do;scrambling over he scooped Lloyd up and going back on some training he had received while in high school military class he got him on his back and turned to flee.....
what awaited him he would never forget, the thing had flew or teleported to the floor of the library and was looking down on him, down because it had to be at least seven feet tall and looked somewhat human in shape, except for the tentacles,or feelers or what ever in God's name they were;it had hundreds of them all over it's oily, slick body and it's arms were long and powerful, but the worst was the face...or lack of it,the face if it could be called that split down the middle and was a horrifying maze of teeth and a toung that darted out snake like.
The last thing he remembered was screaming like a terrified child.
