ThrillingAH

You may already be listening, but if you aren’t I thought it was well past time for me to highlight one of the podcasts that has recently taken over my phone.  The Thrilling Adventure Hour is a podcast taken from live recording of a monthly stage show at the Coronet Theatre in Los Angeles. The show itself is fashioned after the old-time radio dramas that ruled the airwaves before the adoption of television as the main form of family entertainment.

The Thrilling Adventure Hour has been occuring monthly since 2005 and is the brain child of writers Ben Acker and Ben Blacker, with the help of director Aaron Ginsburg and composer and band leader Andy Paley.

The main cast is made up of The Workjuice Players, Paget Brewster, Paul F. Tompkins, Marc Evan Jackson, Mark Gagliardi, Busy Philipps, Autumn Reeser, Craig Cackowski, Annie Savage, Hal Lublin, James Urbaniak, John DiMaggio, John Ennis, Aaron Ginsburg, Andy Paley, and Jonathan Dinerstein. There are also frequent and plentiful guest stars which would take me far to long to list.

The show features a three segment format, featuring most commonly “Sparks Nevada, Marshall on Mars,” and “Beyond Belief,” but also featuring such segments as “ Amelia Earhart, Fearless Flyer,” “The Adventures of Captain Laserbeam,” “Jefferson Reid, Ace American,” “The Cross-time Adventures of Colonel Tick-Tock,” and “Down in the Moonshine Holler.”

My current personal favorite is “The Adventures of Captain Laserbeam,” the combination of Laserbeam, the bumbling villains and Laserbeam’s groupies the Adventurekateers provides deliciously campy goodness.

You might not enjoy all the segments equally, but I have no doubt that if you give this podcast a shot you will find at least one that makes you laugh, frequently, loudly and often embarassingly in public.
