San Diego Comic Fest returns October 4-6, 2013

Guests include science fiction grandmaster Larry Niven, Disney Legend Floyd Norman, award-inning artist Russ Heath, Oscar-winning visual effects artist Phil Tippet, IDW publisher Ted Adams

The friendly comic book convention with a casual atmosphere will return in 2013. The second annual San Diego Comic Fest (http://www.sdcomicfest.org/) will be October 4-6 at the San Diego Town & Country Resort and Convention Center, 500 Hotel Circle North in Mission Valley. Comic Fest will feature individual talks, slide shows and panel discussions on comics, science fiction and other related fields; a sales room; original artwork; a masked ball and film screenings.

“Comic Fest is a new ‘old-school’ comic convention that captures the intimate scale, camaraderie and good feeling of the fan gatherings and conventions of yesteryear,” says Mike Towry, the convention chair and one of the co-founders of San Diego Comic-Con. “The Fest brings professional writers, artists and filmmakers together with their fans in an environment of creative exchange, much as the early Comic-Cons did.”

The 2013 Comic Fest guest of honor is Larry Niven, one of the Grandmasters of science fiction. The winner of many awards for his work, Larry is probably best known for his Ringworld novels. He also has written fantasy works, television screenplays and comic book scripts.

In honor of Larry’s appearance at the Fest, convention committee members are going to present Draco Tavern, Earth’s only multi-species coffee bar and the setting for many of the author’s stories. Committee members will create and populate Draco Tavern with art, sculpture and costumes from Larry’s galaxy-spinning stories. Draco Tavern will serve as a place where fans and creators can mingle and hang out in an environment of creative exchange.

The other Comic Fest guests of honor are:

  • Floyd Norman, animation guest of honor. Floyd, whose animation career dates to the 1950s, has worked on many Disney and Pixar films, including Toy Story 2, Sleeping Beauty, Jungle Book and Mulan. He was named a Disney Legend in 2009.
  • Russ Heath, comic book guest of honor. Russ, a comic book artist since 1947, is best known for his DC Comics war stories and his art for Playboy‘s “Little Annie Fanny” comic strip. He was inducted into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame in 2009.
  • Bjo and John Trimble, science fiction fan guests of honor. Active in science fiction fandom for more than 50 years, the Trimbles are probably best known for leading the successful campaign to bring the original Star Trek TV series back for a third season in 1968.
  • Richard Kyle, comics fan guest of honor. Richard has been a comic book pioneer for many years. In a 1964 article, he coined the now ubiquitous terms “graphic story” and “graphic novel.” He and a business partner opened one of the first retail comic book stores in 1973.

Other creators who have confirmed they will attend Comic Fest include:

  • Ted Adams, co-founder and CEO of IDW Comics, a San Diego company that is the fourth largest American comics publisher.
  • Phil Tippet, a visual-effects pioneer who won Academy Awards for Star Wars Return of the Jedi and Jurassic Park.
  • David Lloyd, a British comic book artist best known for his collaboration with writer Alan Moore on the series V for Vendetta.
  • Barry Ira Geller, who will tell what really happened when the CIA used his screenplay, based on Roger Zelazny’s Lord of Light, and accompanying artwork by Jack Kirby as the cover story to free U.S. hostages from Iran in 1979 – the backstory of the firm Argo.
  • Scott Shaw!, an award-winning cartoonist and writer in the fields of comic books, animation, advertising and toy design.
  • Marv Wolfman, creator of dozens of comic book characters and one-time editor-in-chief of Marvel Comics.
  • Greg Bear, winner of multiple Hugo and Nebula awards for his science fiction stories.
  • Michael Gross, National Lampoon art director in the 1970s and producer of such films as Heavy Metal and Ghostbusters.

Hours of operation will be 10 a.m. to midnight on Oct. 19 and 20 and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Oct. 21. Convention memberships are available at www.sdcomicfest.org.
